The Parent Compass: How to Help Your Teens Navigate Their Own Success
The Parent Compass co-authors join Maria Sansone to offer tips on navigating the teen years.
The Parent Compass: Navigating Your Teen’s Wellness and Academic Journey in Today’s Competitive World was born out of the ‘Varsity Blues’ college scandal. It was written by college counselors Jenn Curtis, MSW, and Cynthia Clumeck Muchnick, MA, who wanted to give parents a guide to navigate the teen years and college process, without taking competition too far.
Praise the Journey, Not the Destination with Jenn Curtis
The journey is where we all learn to do hard things. We make mistakes, experience successes (and failures), develop resilience, practice growth mindset and build self-confidence. As parents, if we focus on the destination — winning the race, acing the SATs or getting into the “right” college — our children miss out on all those experiences that serve as the building blocks to social emotional growth. In this podcast episode, we sat down with Jenn Curtis, MSW, co-author of The Parent Compass, to learn strategies that you can use to support your child on their journey towards self-advocacy, acceptance and exploration. Listen now!

Parent Footprint with Dr. Dan
Dr. Dan interviews educational consultants, podcast hosts, and authors Cynthia C. Muchnick, M.A. & Jenn Curtis, M.S.W. today about their show and their book The Parent Compass: Navigating Your Teen's Wellness and Academic Journey in Today's Competitive World.
Dr. Dan discusses how parents can best -- and appropriately -- support their kids in our hyper-competitive and uncertain landscape with Cynthia and Jenn.
The Parent Compass concept challenges the notion that "success" is based on getting into a "name brand" college or being at the top of one's class -- instead it proposes that success can mean many things: living a life with purpose, attending a “right fit” college, being able to self-advocate, and embracing mistakes. When we let our kids use their own voices, build resilience, and practice independence, we give them the path to a lifetime of real success.

Talking to Teens
Let’s be honest–the pressure of the college application process is enough to drive anyone crazy. Both you and your kids might find yourselves losing sleep and shedding tears over the endless rampage of SAT scores, personal essays and scholarship applications. It’s so intense that celebrities are willing to bribe schools and admissions officers with thousands of dollars just to get their kid’s feet in the door!
Although you just want the best for your kid, it’s easy to get caught up in the competition of it all and become another expectant force breathing down their necks. You might find yourself so obsessed with whether or not they get in that you forget to notice all the hard work and character growth they’ve exhibited throughout the process. To understand how we can guide kids through college apps and other teenage chaos, we’re sitting down with educational consultants Cynthia Clumeck Muchnick and Jenn Curtis.
Mighty Parenting with Sandy Fowler
Parenting teenagers is quite different from parenting toddlers and young children. We want our teens to have a successful academic journey, to be happy and healthy. Yet, many parenting practices prevent that. In fact, they can stress our teens out and push them toward anxiety. And in an effort to see our kids on the road to success, even well-intentioned parents are behaving badly and exacerbating the problems teens are facing. Cynthia Muchnick and Jenn Curtis know this. They are veteran education consultants, experts in the college admissions process, and mothers who provide a roadmap for parents during the pressure-laden teen years. Today they share their expertise with Mighty Parenting podcast host Sandy Fowler.

The Parent Compass provides guidance on what parents' roles should be in supporting their teens' mental health as they traverse the maze of the adolescent years. Dying to Ask with Deirdre Fitzpatrick
The relationship between parent and teen has never been more important. The problem is it's now more complicated than ever. That's why Cynthia Muchnick and Jenn Curtis wrote The Parent Compass: Navigating your Teen's Wellness & Academic Journey in Today's Competitive World. Neither Muchnick nor Curtis knew families were taking fake rowing pics to scam their way into prestigious schools. But they did know that something awful was brewing in how families pursued college acceptances overall. Both have worked as college counselors for years and were troubled by what they were seeing in their offices. Kids who couldn't speak for themselves. Parents who can't stop talking about their kids' college dreams.
Muchnick and Curtis say now is the time to reboot how you parent and see your kid for who they truly are, and more importantly, who they truly want to become. Failing to do so can have disastrous results.
On this Dying to Ask:
How to be a more effective parent during the teen years.
What the college process is really like right now.
And why pandemic parents need to give themselves a timeout and learn how to listen.
SheSez with Linda Grasso
The Varsity Blues scandal blew the lid off the college admissions process two years ago this month. For many parents, the scandal underscored what they already were feeling: the process of getting your kid into a good college is not only challenging, it can be unfair — and even corrupt. With deferrals, postponements and no standardized testing, COVID has made the process even more challenging.
In this episode, college admissions experts Cynthia Muchnick and Jenn Curtis address how to best support your child through the process as well as how the scandal and Covid have impacted it. Cynthia and Jenn are the authors of The Parent Compass: Navigating Your Teen's Wellness and Academic Journey in Today's Competitive World— named the number one Best Parenting Audiobook in 2021 by Book Authority.
